On behalf of the BEDA board of directors and myself, I want to begin by thanking you for your membership. Your vision and belief in BEDA is a testament to your insight to the future. We are confident that the journey we are taking together is just the beginning of a new day in our understanding of binge eating disorder and other conditions that will likely reshape our understanding of the intersections between eating disorders, addictions, and obesity.
We also want to inform you that the organization has been granted its 501c3 status by the IRS. This means that BEDA is officially recognized as a non-profit entity. We are thrilled with this milestone as it will allow us to raise funds essential to program and outreach development.
and we want to take this opportunity to update you on what we’ve accomplished over the last year and where we are going. We hope you will consider renewal an integral part of building our community to provide a home for those who struggle with BED and associated conditions.* BEDA is in its infancy and needs your support to continue toward help, hope, and recovery for those who need it.

the 2011 national conference planning is well underway; our web committee is working on an overhaul of the web site so that it will be a true resource and community; and we are in the process of developing educational programming to support those who treat individuals with binge eating disorder and associated conditions.* We are also looking at ways that BEDA can assist individuals and families in their journeys. It is vital that the resources that are available provide education, options, and a way forward.
We are very proud of the accomplishments that have taken place over this last year and would like to share just a few:
- First annual national conference took place in Baltimore, MD in March of 2010 and hosted nearly 200 professionals, individuals, and family members. Feedback was very positive and we are thrilled to provide a true community for those who struggle with and treat BED and associated conditions.*
- Membership launched and is growing rapidly.
- Elected BEDA’s first President, VP, Secretary, and Treasurer and expanded its board members to diversify the viewpoints and represent our community.
- Formed BEDA’s Scientific Advisory Council chaired by Cynthia Bulik, PhD. This group is made up of leaders in the binge eating disorder research community and is the scientific advisory arm of the organization.
- Formed Honorary Congressional Committee which currently has 25 House and Senate members. Committee members recognize binge eating disorder as an issue important to members of Congress and are an integral part of our effort to build awareness.
- BEDA became an Associate Member of the STOP Obesity Alliance--an important step toward fulfilling BEDA’s goal to be the bridge organization between the eating disorder and obesity communities. BEDA now has a voice amongst all of stakeholder groups concerned with obesity including the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, and the Center for Diease Control and Prevention to name a few. This seat at the table is important in that it allows our perspectives and ideas to be heard.
- BEDA is now a member of the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC), the public policy organization for the eating disorders community. This is another important step toward becoming the bridge organization between the eating disorder and obesity communities.
- Launched organization’s quarterly newsletter and began providing resources to individuals and family members through our on-line provider database and via phone. We expect this service to grow quickly as the disorder becomes recognized.
- Submitted comments to both the DSM-V committee concerning provisional language around the new BED designation and the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” program to reduce childhood obesity.
BEDA is committed to challenging the integration of binge eating disorder in to all education being provided on eating disorders, obesity and addiction. Currently, we find that although it clearly is a part of all of these populations, it is rarely mentioned despite the millions of individuals, families, and communities affected. There is much work to be done. Please join us!
Once you have completed the membership renewal process, you will receive an online receipt that provides your username and password. Please keep this for future use.
Warmly,
